Caring For Your New Arrival

Congratulations! You've adopted your first or fifth baby through Lost Angels. As you prepare to take your new pet home, whether your little angel is young or old there a few things to keep in mind.

Visit your vet
No matter the age or breed of your new pet, a visit to your vet is top priority. While LAAR ensures all babies are healthy and up to date on shots, it still makes sense to get your pet used to your vet and your vet acquainted with your pet. It's a long term relationship that cannot be ignored.

Pet-proof your home
Unless you already have a little angel at home, you will need to ensure your home is safe for the new arrival. Precautions such as keeping doors locked, securing screens, and keeping small objects off the ground will prevent injury and a runaway puppy.

You are what you eat
Diet is important to keep your pet healthy. Feed your pet a high quality dog food that provides all essential nutrients. Watch the treats - provide low-fat biscuits or try low-fat alternatives such as baby carrots and unsalted pretzels.

Don't forget to have fun. Exercise is what a pet needs to stay active and out of trouble. Running together in the yard, playing frisbee or taking a daily walk are all great ways to enjoy an exercise routine.

Look Who's Found a Home!

I adopted two really great guys a couple of weeks ago from Lost Angels. Pepper and Poncho are now a part of our family and have brought so much fun and love already. I am the caregiver for both of my parents and recently had lost my best friend "Archie" to old age. He was a cocker spaniel and really was like one of my kids. I missed him so much I really needed to find another animal to fill the void in my heart. Luckily, I found Pepper and Poncho on your internet site and as soon as I saw their pictures I was hooked. Your organization provides a wonderful and needed service. I hope all of your little Lost Angels will find good homes.

Hi! My new name is Koko; I used to be called Leila, but my mommy is just "Kookoo for Koko-puffs" and that's me! I am so happy in my new home. I have lots of toys and lots of love and am learning all kinds of new manners. At home I take my zebra for a walk all over the house, and sometimes I just take my leash for a walk! I am also learning to sit and I try really hard to sit patiently while mommy fixes my meals. My mommy calls me her "boat dog", too, cuz she taught me how to sit nicely in the kayak. My mommy tells everyone I healed her heart after her other doggie-boy died back in June. I'm glad I make her happy. I'm happy, too. Good luck all you other doggies and maybe we can have a reunion sometime to share some stories face-to-face and show off our families. Thank you to my foster family who taught me to love little kids and a BIG thank you to Lost Angels for saving me. God bless all of you workers and volunteers and foster families. We are lucky and that's for sure!

Here's one little adoptee who is happy. When adopted, he was called "CJ", now he's called "Jack" after a human cousin who doesn't know when to be quiet. Jack is settling in here after some rough moments. All in all, he's a doll. I liken having Jack to having a two- year old again in the house. Everything goes in his mouth. He's either into something or thinking about getting into something...he wants ALL the attention (and usually gets it). But he also gives back a lot of love. Nothing makes him happier than snuggling up to you. He and Marlot (our existing dog) have a good, respectful relationship. Jack loves to nibble on her ears and give her kisses all over her face. He's pretty cute to watch. For a little guy he's not afraid of anything - regardless of its size. Always ready for adventure.

Lucy and Ethel are fitting right in with the Freeman Family! I want to thank Lost Angels for the opportunity to have added two wonderful members to our family. Your organization is AWESOME and I am so glad we just stopped by to "look" last Saturday. They definitely have helped fill the void of losing my pet last month of 13 years. Thanks again to you and your staff for making the adoption of Lucy and Ethel so fun!

Buddy has been adopted by a single mother with 2 children. His original foster folks are happy to say he is loved very much by his new family. His worst problem is which little girl to sleep with at night. What a fantastic success story.

And, this just in...Molly has a home! This wonderful, affectionate girl was with us for almost 3 years and we are so pleased that she finally has found her forever home. Our last report is that Molly and her new family are very happy and doing well.

Have You Heard?

Lost Angels is everywhere! Not only are we at Petco every week, we've started Cooking for Canines throughout October, and in November we'll be taking photos with Santa. We also now meet the last Friday of each month at Winners Sports Grill on Anderson Road in Tampa. For more information, check out our calendar.

Like our newsletter and want to spread the news? If you can, print it off and take a copy to your vet's and doctor's offices for reading material. It's a great way to help others learn about Lost Angels. Our fur babies will thank you.

Here's a low fat treat shared by Linda (new mom to Pepper and Poncho):
Slice turkey or chicken hot dogs thin. Place between paper towels and cook in the microwave for about 5-6 minutes. After they cool, place in a baggie and store in the fridge. Dogs love them and they are an easy and inexpensive treat.

Love your vet? Tell us about it. Give us their name and location -- tell us what makes them special - we'll include them in the next edition.
